 Died of wounds at No. 1 Canadian CCS. Buchan Observer 24/4/1917 - Fyvie -"Mr & Mrs Campbell, Windyhill, Fyvie, have received intimation of the death from wounds on the 13th inst 913/4/1917) of their son.
Sgt Campbell who was severely wounded last summer at the Somme was about 22 years of age and prior to the war was in the employment of Mr Ross, baker, Rothienorman."  Medal collected by his father.

Buchan Observer 5/6/1917. Peterhead - "Intimation has been received by Mr Clyne, Auchtygall, Peterhead that his 2nd son was killed in action on 16th May. L/Cpl Clyne was 21 years of age and was employed on the farm previous to the war. He had been awarded MM for gallantry at Roclincourt."

Killed 31/7/1917. Buchan Observer 14/8/1917: (Ellon) "L/Cpl James Matthew, Gordons, killed, was a son of Mr George Matthew, Kirk Lane Ellon. He was recently awarded the MM for gallant conduct. He was 21 years of age and before the war was in the employment of Mr William Littlejohn, tailor, Ellon."

Wounded 16/5/1917. Buchan Observer 1/5/1917 - Mintlaw "Son of Mrs Thom, has been wounded in the right hand and had 2 fingers amputated. He joined the Gordons shortly before the war and has seen much service having been wounded in the left shoulder 2 years ago. Before enlisting he was in farm service."  He was a POW from March 1918.

Military Medal has been awarded to the undermentioned man for gallantry under heavy shell fire while on duty with pack (animals) from convoy on night 21-22/4/1917:

  MM          240895              Pte       Mair, Alexander                               Buchan Observer 5/6/1917 - Fraserburgh - Award of MM. Mrs Mair, 49 Frithside St Fraserburgh, has received from the Major General a message to the effect that her husband, Private Mair, has been awarded the MM for gallantry. Pte Mair was engaged in transport work when he had his two horses shot and was wounded himself.  He stood by a severely wounded comrade for 24 hours until relief came.

(a) for gallantry near ROCLINCOURT between 9th and 12th April 1917:

Bar          to MC      2/Lt (A/Capt) Wright, Maxwell Campbell                                                Original MC mentioned in War Diary for February 1917 and LG 10/1/1917. MC citation: For conspicuous gallantry in action.  He assumed command of and led his company in the attack with great courage and determination.  He set a splendid example throughout. Bar citation: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  He commanded a company in the assault with great courage and determination.  When the line was held up and began to waver, he rallied the men and personally led them forward, carrying the whole line with them.  The success was mainly due to his splendid example and fearlessness.
  MC     Lieut   Hutcheon, AlbertCitation: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his company with great determination. It was largely due to his courage and example that the objective was gained and held for two days. Lt Hutcheon was blinded during actions of 16/5/1917

(b) for gallantry displayed during operations near THE CHEMICAL WORKS, ROUX on 16th May 1917: 

    MC           Lieut  Kelly, Alexander                 Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  He led his company with great dash and daring, rallying them on several occasions under heavy barrage.  Though wounded, he refused to leave the company and led it forward to counter-attack.  His services were of great value, and his fearlessness was beyong praise. Kelly was wounded on 16/5/1917 and taken prisoner 21/3/1918.
  MC     2/LT (A/Capt)   Davidson, William Received a Bar to MC for gallantry during operations near Langemark on 31st July 1917

  MM   240460   L/Cpl  Thomson, Allan  Buchan Observer 7/8/1917 "MM for Burnhaven Soldier - Cpl Allan Thomson, the eldest son of Mr Allan Thomson, has been awarded the MM for bravery in the field. Cpl Thomson, before joining the 5th Gordons on the outbreak of war, was employed as a blacksmith with Mr Whyte, Sandford. He has two other brothers serving, and one killed on 26th March 1916. Later received DCM for action on 20/11/1917. Killed in action 28/7/1918
