1st/5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders

Reports from the Buchan Observer following the battle of High Wood 30 July 1916

"Your boy has done his bit most worthily in this terrible conflict.  Future generations will read with thrilled breath the story of deeds like his."
Rev. William Watson, chaplain 5th Gordons to Mr Peter Mackay on the death of his son, aged 19.
"To have died such a death as he has is something to be proud of.  His name shall be writ large on the country's roll of honour." Major McDonald to Mrs Buchan, Peterhead, on the death of her husband.
"It may be noted in passing that the Roll of Honour of this quiet hamlet ranks higher than that of many a larger centre."
Comment in the Buchan Observer  regarding the district's casualties - October 1916.

High Wood was the largest battle in which the Battalion had been engaged up to that time.  The names of casualties from the attack that took place on Sunday 30th July (and continued into Monday 31st) began appearing in the local paper on Tuesday, 8th August, the details being supplied by relatives.  The first names to appear were those of the wounded, together with some killed during the preceeding week.  The deaths began to appear the following week and continued throught August.

I have included only an index of district casualties here.  Please contact me if you would like a full transcript of an entry. carolyn@carolynmorrisey.com  I have included here only the names appearing from 8th August, but hold those from 1/8/1916 to 31/10/1916.
