District Casualty List Index from the Buchan Observer 

August - September 1917

The following is an index of names that appeared in the Buchan Observer in the weeks following the opening of the battle of Passchendaele on 31st July 1917. Although the number of names appearing is still significant, it is considerably less than appeared after the major battles of 1916.  This is not to say that there were necessarily fewer casualties, only that fewer were local men, a reflection of the changing makeup of the Battalion. A glance at the list of wounded for the battle will show that of the 168 names listed, fewer than 50 are from the original recruiting area of the 5th Battalion.

Once again, the majority of the casualties began to appear two weeks after the battle - 14th August and continued into the following week.
