(DOZINGHEM MILITARY CEMETERY)  Scotsman 19/7/1917: Capt Grant-Peterkin, Yeomanry, (died of wounds) was the youngest son of the late James Grant-Peterkin, of Grange Forres. He was gazetted Sec. Lieut in August 1914.
11 Sept    A/Capt   Gay, David Scott    Wounded Scotsman 19/9/1917: "A/Capt Gay, Black Watch, attached Gordons, 2nd son of David Gay, 45 Trinity Rd Edinburgh, has been admitted to hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. Capt Gay joined the Camerons at the start of hostilities and after service in France received his commission a year ago. In civil life he is on the staff of the Scottish Insurance Corp. Ltd, and is a well known  Edinburgh rugby player.

Extracts from the War Diaries of September 1917 

11th Sept         Seige Camp

 

During the forenoon of the 11th, while the Battalion was carrying out a practice attack on the training ground near Siege Camp, 3 hostile aeroplanes flew overhead and dropped several bombs, as a result of which Capt C. Grant Peterkin, Capt D.S. Gay and 8 other ranks were wounded.
12th-15th Sept 
Right sub-sector 

Took over the line from 7th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. 
Throughout the night and during the day [13th Sept] there was considerable artillery activity by both sides.
When darkness fell [night of 14th/15th] B & D companies relieved A & C in the front line. During the relief a platoon of C company moving back to reserve was shelled in the vicinity of Cockcroft. I other rank being killed and 6 wounded.

16th Sept
Right sub-sector

After a fairly quiet day the area Mon Du Rasta was subjected to heavy burst of fire.  Two casualties were sustained by the Battalion - 1 other rank wounded, 1 N.Y.D.N [not yet diagnosed neurological - i.e. 'Shell Shock'.]

17th Sept 

During the night 16/17th the Battalion was relieved by 7th Black Watch and moved to shelter in the Canal Bank.

19th Sept 
Dirty Bucket Camp

On the night of 18/19th, various working parties were provided by A & C companies. The tasks allotted were completed and no casualties sustained. The Battalion was relieved on the night of 19/20th from Canal Bank to Dirty Bucket Camp. [There are no details of the action that resulted in the death of one man and the wounding of six others on 19th.]

21st-23rd Sept Canal Bank

During the forenoon [21st] the completion of fighting kit was attended to and preparations made for moving forward as Divisional Reserve. In the evening the Battalion moved to Canal Bank and was held in readiness to move at an hour's notice.  A & B Companies carried out musketry practices on the range at Brielen on 23rd. The Battalion less A & B companies moved back to Dirty Bucket Camp in the forenoon of 24th. [Battalion moved to Proven at the end of the month.]
