1st/5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders

260165 Pte William Waddell Clark

Pte William Clark

William Waddell Clark was the youngest son of John and Janet Pirrett Clark.  He was born in Barony, Lanarkshire in about 1892.  His father was a bookbinder from Edinburgh. In 1901 John and his wife lived with their  five children at 175 Holm Street. They later moved to 31A Elderslie Street Glasgow. William enlisted in Glasgow. The photograph above indicates he was in the army early in the war - 1914 or early 1915.  His older brother John (Jack) was in the Lovat Scouts.  William was in the Black Watch before being transferred to the 5th Gordons sometime in 1917.  He was wounded by artillery fire on the night of 14th-15th September 1917 and died at a Casualty Clearing Station  on 16th September 1917.  He is buried at Mendinghem Military Cemetery.  My thanks to Scott Wilson, William's great nephew, for the personal information and the photograph.
