1st/5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders

 2129 Pte Charles Fraser

Charles Fraser was born in Banchory in 1896, the son of Archibald Fraser (foreman forester) and wife Annie.  Charles was working with his father as an assistant forester at Fyvie when war was declared. He enlisted at Peterhead on 22nd August 1914 and went with the Battalion to Bedford and then to France in May 1915.

At the Battle of High Wood he was recorded as wounded and missing in the Battalion casualty list. His death was still not confirmed by March 1917 when a new service number -  240437 - was issued to his name.  A year after his disappearance he was declared to have "died in the field 30/7/1916 or since".
He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing of the Somme.
