1st/5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders
 

Philip Hugh Gore Roberts.

 

 2nd Lieut. 5th Battn. The Gordon Highlanders (T.F) the younger son of the late Rev. William Walter Roberts of 6 Westbourne Park Road, W., and his wife Ann Shannon, dau. of the late James Caird, and grandson of the late Capt. John Walter Roberts R.N.

He was born at Addison Gardens, Kensington, 30 May 1896 and educated at Clifton College where he was a member of the O.T.C. He left College Dec 1914 and obtained a commission in the Gordon Highlanders 27 Feb. 1915.

He went to France 2 May and took part in several actions, when he showed much bravery and daring.

He accompanied his Company Commander, Major McDonald, on all scouting expeditions, and on one occasion captured a German flag and standard amid heavy fire, quite unhurt. He was killed in ordinary trench duty at Bellincourt 21 August 1915. 

2nd Lieut Roberts was unmarried and is buried at Millen Court.
