1st/5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders

Sgt. Robert S. Anderson No. 1416.

Sgt Anderson POW card

Sergeant Robert Anderson was one of a number of men reported as "Missing believed killed" during action on 26th March 1916 while the 51st Division held a section of the Arras Front.

Anderson was later found to be a prisoner of war at Minden POW camp in Westphalia, Germany. In  "The Prisoners 1914 -18" by Robert Jackson, a British soldier described  Minden as "another terrible camp ... two months before I received another parcel so I had to live like a pig..." p.30.

On the 1914 Battalion Roll, Robert Anderson is shown as being a member of 'G' Company and his address was 55 Shore Street Fraserburgh.

Cards such as the one shown above were included in food parcels prepared  by prisoner welfare associations formed by the various regiments.  A number on the card corresponded to the number on the parcel, and this card was returned by the recipient.
